Burpees v. Suicides

by Natalie on November 16, 2010

Hi there, how’s your day been?  Mine’s been pretty darn good :)

I woke up bright and early to coffee and a delicious bowl of oatmeal.  I nearly named this post “Dessert for Breakfast Part III”, but decided to wait until it looks more like dessert and less like boring old oatmeal…because this is anything but!

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
-1/4 cup oat bran (or 1/2 cup oatmeal)
-1/2 cup water
-1/2 medium honeycrisp apple, shredded (or 1/2 cup applesauce)
-1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
-1/2 tsp. cinnamon
-1 tbsp. ground flaxseed
-2/3 cup plain greek yogurt
-1 tsp. maple syrup

Combine oats, water, apple, vanilla, and cinnamon in a large bowl.  Microwave on high for 3 minutes.  Remove and stir in flaxseed, yogurt, and maple syrup.

Even Colin commented on how good it smelled!  He usually just eats a Clif bar and banana for breakfast, so this was quite the compliment!  I warned him that before long I’ll be whipping up double batches of my oatmeal creations ;)

I met my lifting partner at the gym for a mid-morning workout session.  We deemed today “Tabada Tuesday” and it was killer!  Most of the workout was similar to this one, except the beginning, which included this.

I cleaned up, headed to a meeting, then to the rec to coach boot camp.

Today’s workout was a doozie and at one point I was a little scared for my life!  That was until I gave my campers the option of doing 5 burpees or 2 full-court suicide drills.  Their faces instantly lit up and all of a sudden they loved me again! Apparently people like having choices ;)

[They chose the burpees by the way]

I think the coolest part of the workout was that we used NO equipment!  It went something like this:

Boot Camp Circuit
squats-1 minute
pushups-1 minute
jumping lunges-1 minute
lateral hops-1 minute
lateral shuffle-1 minute
burpees-10
tricep dips-1 minute
glute bridges-1 minute
tuck ups-1 minute
superpeople-1 minute
plank-1 minute
repeat 3 times

I had a productive day and evening full of work and homework…and a chilly walk with the dog.  I’m about to take a bath and get in bed to read this month’s book club book.

Sweet dreams :)

*TIP TIME*
If you only have 15-20 minutes to workout, don’t skip it!  Make the most of your time by cranking up the intensity and working your tail off for the time that you do have.  Think sprints, jumping movements/plyometrics, and body weight exercises.  You will boost your metabolism, get some endorphins going, and sweat!!

Question:  Is boot camp offered where you live?  If so, have you tried it out?

I love your tip today! Sometimes, literally, all I have to spare is 30 minutes, so I head to BB and get the most out of that 30 minutes. Work harder, dig deeper and feel great after! :)

And I’m still wondering how oatmeal and delicious can be said in the same sentence! (Super kidding, I wish I loved it as much as you. It always sounds and looks so good!)

Have a great night! :)

I think I’d actually go for suicides… I’ll dealing with running, but some parts of my body don’t like all the jumping. Ha.

Short, intense workouts are often the best. :)

I did a bootcamp years ago and it was a great workout! You remind me that I should see if they have it at my gym!
