Sweating out the Sick

by Natalie on November 12, 2010

Hi, happy Friday :)

It’s been a rainy, rainy day here today!

I woke up this morning feeling a little better, but still not quite myself.  I thought maybe a stabilizing breakfast would help.  I’m not sure if it did, but it tasted really good!

Raspberry Almond Oat Bran
•1/4 cup oat bran
•1 tbsp. ground flaxseed
•2/3 cup frozen raspberries
•1/4 tsp. almond extract
•1 tsp. sweetener (stevia, maple syrup, etc)
•2/3 cup non-fat plain greek yogurt

Combine oat bran and 3/4 cup water in large microwave safe bowl.  Cook according to instructions.  Remove and stir in flaxseed.  Set aside.  Combine raspberries, almond extract, and sweetener in a small bowl.  Microwave on high for one minute or until warm.  Mash with a fork.  Combine all ingredients in bowl and swirl.  Enjoy!

I headed to the gym this morning to teach Per4Mance [my usual Friday kickboxing/agility/toning class] and it felt good to sweat!  The class was completely full and I got some positive feedback that participants really liked it today.  Maybe my breakfast did give me the boost I needed ;)

I thought my cardio portion was extra challenging today:

5-min warm-up
side + front jabs
agility
bob ‘n weave + x-jabs, hooks, uppers
knee strikes (slow and fast)
agility
front kicks (slow and fast) + side kicks (slow and fast)
agility

agility=jumping jacks, jumping rope, squat jumps, lateral hops, jump shots, hop overs, ski jumps, jumping lunges, quick feet, criss-crosses, bottom kicks [30 seconds each]

After class I headed to campus to talk with my advisor and go over our next assignment for Adv. Ex-Phys lab.  I ended up leaving frustrated about getting my schedule set for next semester AND I didn’t really understand our next assignment!  Perhaps it was just my foggy head…at least that’s what I’m tellin’ myself ;)

I wanted something warm for lunch and decided to make something “salad-ish” out of the mexican lasagna leftovers.  Colin always teases me that I can basically make a salad out of anything and I think he’s right!

Basically I just heated up a square of the leftovers on top of three big handfuls of spinach and microwaved for a few minutes until the spinach had wilted and the lasagna was hot.  I cut the lasagna into chunks and stirred it all up then topped with a bunch of romaine lettuce.

This afternoon I did some homework and rested up before venturing out in the pouring rain to work.  It was a busy evening at the gym, I guess people were either stir crazy from the weather or ready to get their sweat on before the weekend!

Tonight I was supposed to go to a party with the lab crew, but decided it would be better to come home and get a good night’s sleep.  I’m subbing kickboxing in the morning and have a ton of homework to do this weekend so I need to get my energy back!!

Have a great night :)

*TIP TIME*
When choosing a satisfying meal think of the following:  temperature (hot or cold), texture (crunchy or smooth), and flavor (savory or sweet).  When you combine different aspects of these characteristics you will find that your food choice will be more interesting to your palate!

Power Thought of the Day
I appreciate all that I do.  I am good enough just as I am.  I love and approve of myself.
